Reducing the Barrier to Entry for Blockchain by Leveraging the Capabilities of Kubernetes - Duncan Johnston-Watt & Csilla Zsigri, BTP
We motivate the discussion with an introduction to the Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) Landscape, an open source initiative modelled on the CNCF Landscape, before focusing on the increasing importance of Kubernetes as the bedrock in this increasingly complex world. Kubernetes is the perfect environment in which to deploy blockchain solutions. Yet the complexity of blockchain deployments, added to the complexity of Kubernetes deployments, is often a barrier to adoption of this technology. Our talk will focus on how we address this by automating the deployment and management of DLTs from the Hyperledger Foundation on Kubernetes, overlaying support for the open source smart contract language, Daml, from Digital Asset. We will showcase the benefits of this approach highlighting our work in the insurance and financial services arena. We will close with a call to action encouraging the audience to explore this for themselves.

How to Be a Good Corporate Citizen in Open Source - Dawn Foster, VMware
Collaboration in open source projects is important for companies, but it can be difficult to strike the right balance between the needs of the company and the open source project. This can create friction and put pressure on employees who participate on behalf of their company when the needs of the individual, the company, and the community are not aligned. This talk will focus on ways to create this alignment and help all of us be successful together. Communities are a critical component of open source projects, and the way that people participate can reflect positively or negatively on the person and organization that they represent. The majority of work in some projects, like Kubernetes, is done by people working for a wide variety of organizations, and the success of many projects requires participation from these companies. The talk contains three major sections: 1) Dynamics of collaboration in open source projects between individuals, companies, and communities. 2) Strategies for participating in ways that will benefit your company, your employees, and the community. 3) Tips for being a good corporate citizen as you contribute to open source projects.

Data Platforms Made Easy - Introducing TRAC D.A.P. - Martin Traverse & Greg Wiltshire, Accenture
With TRAC D.A.P. we introduce a radically new approach to building data platforms for highly regulated industries, that combines the power, flexibility and insight of modern analytic tools with Total Repeatability, Audit and Control (TRAC). In this talk, we will present the design approach we used to develop the TRAC platform, which can be useful to anyone who is looking to build or improve platforms for model development and execution. We'll look at how the new architectural paradigm can change the business, by re-drawing the boundary between business and technology to allow truly independent ownership and delivery. We'll also be covering the TRAC D.A.P. software itself, which is now part of FINOS under an Apache license. TRAC D.A.P. is a complete implementation of a platform built on these principles and available for free to anyone who needs a modern, powerful environment for model development and execution. The talk will include a demo.

Mission Critical Data, and Evaluating the Community in OSS Tech - Mick Semb Wever, The Apache Software Foundation
Apache Cassandra is used in the critical path of most Global Banks yet one might ask why it’s so important in so many financial institutions.

A modernised, cloud native data platform is table stakes as we face new challenges and possibilities. Today, we see this in open banking, cryptocurrencies, data governance, etc. requiring faster, more automated, and accountable data applications at lower operational overheads. While we broadly utilise open source tech to solve these challenges around speed, elasticity, cost and operational overhead, and data governance - is open source really up to the task? Are communities involved in these technologies ready to continuously deliver?

In this session Mick Semb Wever, PMC Chair for Apache Cassandra and Services Leader at DataStax, will discuss how Apache Cassandra, having established itself as THE NoSQL database over the last decade, has re-energised its community and feature development and talk about how ING, Capital One, Visa, ACI, UBS and many others, leverage open source for real-time payments, fraud detection and KYC. This will be backed up with working code examples and demo applications the audience can use for themselves.

An Open Source Architecture for Modernizing Market Risk Management - Aric Rosenbaum & Marius Bogoevici, Red Hat
In today’s environment, financial institutions face challenges that include: * New and more complex calculations due to regulatory demands (i.e., FRTB) and climate risk * Explosive data growth and the need to move and analyze this data * Limited on-premise compute capacity * Need to improve time to value by accelerating model deployment to production To help solve these challenges, Marius Bogoevici and Aric Rosenbaum have worked with industry experts and market leaders to design a forward-thinking, open source solution to better address current challenges and prepare for future needs. Based on real-world use cases, we will show how an open source market and credit risk calculation architectural framework: * Scales risk management by leveraging the hybrid cloud to perform new and more complex calculations in less time at a lower TCO * Accelerates development and deployment of risk models via modern DevSecOps practices * Responds in real-time to market / alternate data via an event driven architecture * Improves risk management by orchestrating and automating the many pre/post-calculation steps * Improves auditability and transparency with flexible rules-based decisioning

How to get them to Commit? - Elena Lape, Theta Labs
You are the full package. You solve their problems, seamlessly integrate with their existing life, and provide the security they need. If only they could see it and decide to commit... We're talking about developers' git commits to open source projects, of course. Getting contributor buy-in for new open source projects is hard. This challenge is multiplied 1000x in highly regulated, 'buttoned up' industries such as finance. Projects in this space require specific knowledge, which most developers won't have. But more importantly — newer, neither widely adopted nor recognized projects coming from the money people are just not perceived as very exciting. Especially as they're unlikely to be something that developers can use on their fun hobby projects outside of work. So why would they be motivated to dig deeper into the ecosystem? Ex-GitHubber turned developer relations strategist, Elena will unveil the secrets of how developers evaluate an open source project, what tips them over the edge to join its community, what makes folks see your value beyond an open code repository, and what ultimately motivates them to contribute to your software.

Open Source Sustainability and our Corporate Social Responsibility - Colin Eberhardt, Scott Logic
Modern software is increasingly complex, made up of hundreds or thousands of open source components, hidden in deeply nested dependency trees. Just how much do we know about these components that are an integral part of our products? What are the risks associated with their usage, and our exposure? Within the financial services industry, most often the solution is to build up a robust defense against these perils. Security scans, license checkers – this helps create a walled garden, but ultimately harms the wider open source ecosystem. This talk will take a closer look at the make-up of modern software supply chains; we’ll look at where this code comes from, who authored it and how it is distributed; ultimately asking ourselves the question, is this sustainable? Despite numerous efforts to address this challenge, via crowdfunding, sponsorship & highlighting critical infrastructure projects, the problem is growing. To solve it, we need a reset in how we view this precious and fragile asset. Much like the environment, grassroots activism can only go so far; to make a difference, large corporations need to wake up to their responsibility and make genuine and tangible commitments.

Open Source Metaverse - Josip Almasi, Open Computing Ltd.
Metaverse became a buzzword nowadays, and different sources estimate Metaverse market to reach $800B any time between 2024 and 2030. But, what's the point? How does the virtual economy work? And, what's the role of open source? Josip Almasi, VRSpace.org project lead, will attempt provide some of the answers. A self-hosted multi-user VR server, audio and video streaming are basic building blocks of VR-enabled web. AI characters provide added value, as advisors, tech support, salesmen etc. Communities of servers share the state of virtual worlds on a distributed immutable ledger, AKA blockchain. On-chain assets represented by Non-Fungible Tokens can be owned and traded, enabling a virtual economy. All this can be built, and is being built already, using exclusively open source software, and thanks to open standards, all building blocks are interchangeable.

Real-time Trade Data Processing and Machine Learning at Giga-Scale with Hazelcast and FINOS Perspective. - John DesJardins & Neil Stevenson, Hazelcast
Trade volumes continue to grow, demanding more scalable solutions for real-time processing. The old approach was to throw hardware at the problem. However, that is no longer needed. Newer more efficient technologies enable smaller, more manageable clusters while handling extreme workloads. Hazelcast, the Open Source real-time data platform, can process billions of events per second with modest compute resources. Meanwhile, FINOS Perspective provides an ideal framework for real-time data visualization. In this session, you will learn how to architect and build the fastest data processing applications that scale linearly, and combine streaming trade data with reference and contextual data and supporting machine learning. Unifying data-in-motion and data-at-rest with real-time ML opens new use-cases across front and back office. We will take you through the end-to-end framework and an example Trade application, built on Hazelcast. We will also show how you can leverage SQL to further explore the operational data in the solution including querying Kafka topics and key-value data on the in-memory data store. Attendees will also get access to the Github sample application shown.

Why Proprietary Investment Research Platforms won't Last - Didier Rodrigues Lopes, OpenBB
Today's investment research platforms are proprietary and come bundled with a full suite of services. This means that your business has to develop complementary solutions on top of these platforms. The most well known investment research platforms are expensive and do not offer a custom solution to fit your business's needs. OpenBB offers the first open source, fully customisable investment research platform that your company can tailor to their own needs, all built off of GitHub's top investment research platform: OpenBB Terminal.
